The Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max is built for people who want a premium smartphone that can handle almost anything, from demanding games and professional video recording to everyday multitasking. Introduced in September 2025, it brings Apple’s A19 Pro chip, a large 6.9-inch OLED display, an upgraded camera system and a battery designed to last longer than previous Pro Max models.

But with its premium price and large size, is it the right phone for everyone? Let’s take a closer look at what it offers.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max Review: Performance, Camera, Battery and More

Design and Build Quality

Apple has given the iPhone 17 Pro Max a refreshed design featuring an aluminium unibody construction, a Ceramic Shield 2 front and Ceramic Shield protection on the back. It is available in Silver, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue.

The phone feels like a substantial flagship, measuring 163.4mm tall and weighing 233g. Its size makes it well suited to watching videos, gaming and working on a large screen, although people who prefer compact phones may find it heavy during extended one-handed use.

The improved front glass coating is designed to offer better scratch resistance and reduce reflections. The phone also has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance under specified laboratory conditions.

Overall, the iPhone 17 Pro Max looks modern and feels premium, although its large body and weight may not suit everyone.

Display

The 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display is one of the phone’s strongest features. With a resolution of 2868 × 1320 pixels, it produces sharp text, detailed images and rich colours.

ProMotion provides an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, making scrolling, animations and supported games feel smooth. HDR support adds more contrast and detail to compatible movies and videos, while peak outdoor brightness of up to 3,000 nits helps improve visibility in bright conditions.

The Always-On display is also useful for checking information without fully waking the screen. Whether you’re browsing social media, editing photos or streaming content, the display delivers a premium viewing experience.

Performance

At the heart of the iPhone 17 Pro Max is Apple’s A19 Pro chip, paired with a six-core CPU, six-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. This combination is designed to handle demanding applications, intensive multitasking, video editing and AI-powered features.

Everyday tasks such as opening apps, switching between programs and editing photos should feel responsive. The phone’s vapour-chamber cooling system is designed to help manage heat during sustained workloads, which is particularly useful when gaming or exporting large video files.

The 12GB of RAM listed for the model configurations also provides room for demanding apps and multitasking. Actual performance will still depend on the application, software version and operating conditions.

Camera Performance

Photography is another major reason to consider this phone. The rear camera system includes three 48MP Fusion cameras: a main camera, an ultra-wide camera and a telephoto camera.

The main camera is designed to capture detailed photographs in a variety of lighting conditions. The ultra-wide camera is useful for landscapes, architecture and group shots, while the telephoto camera helps capture distant subjects without relying entirely on digital zoom.

For video, the phone supports 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120 frames per second with the main camera, alongside advanced recording options for creators. The 18MP front camera includes autofocus and Center Stage features, making it useful for selfies, video calls and content creation.

The camera system is versatile, particularly for people who regularly record videos or want multiple framing options. However, results still depend on lighting, subject movement and the shooting settings used.

Battery Life

Battery life is one of the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s major selling points. Apple rates it for up to 39 hours of video playback, although actual endurance will vary with screen brightness, network conditions, gaming and other usage.

Independent testing by Tom’s Guide recorded 17 hours and 54 minutes in its web-browsing battery test, suggesting that the phone can last a full day of heavy use for many people. That result comes from a controlled test, so everyday results will differ.

For people who stream videos, browse frequently, take photos and use navigation throughout the day, the large battery and efficient chip combination should be reassuring. Heavy gaming, high brightness and mobile data use can still drain the battery more quickly.

Gaming

The A19 Pro chip and six-core GPU make the iPhone 17 Pro Max a strong option for mobile gaming. Its 120Hz display offers smooth motion in supported games, while hardware-accelerated ray tracing can improve lighting and reflections in compatible titles.

The large screen also makes detailed game environments easier to appreciate. Apple’s vapour-chamber cooling system is intended to help maintain performance during longer gaming sessions.

Nevertheless, demanding games can still generate heat and consume considerable battery power. Performance also varies between games, so not every title will use the phone’s full display or graphics capabilities.

Software and Features

The iPhone 17 Pro Max launched with iOS 26, bringing Apple’s Liquid Glass interface and a range of software features. Apple Intelligence is integrated into supported experiences, although feature availability varies by language, region and software version.

The phone includes Face ID, the Dynamic Island, USB-C connectivity and Apple’s ecosystem features, which are particularly convenient for people who also use a Mac, iPad, Apple Watch or AirPods.

As with any smartphone, the long-term experience depends on software updates, app compatibility and how useful Apple’s services are to you. Users moving from Android should also consider whether they are comfortable switching ecosystems.

Charging Speed

Charging is improved compared with earlier Pro Max models. Apple states that the iPhone 17 Pro Max can reach up to 50% charge in around 20 minutes when using a compatible 40W-or-higher USB-C power adapter and cable.

It also supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging at up to 25W with compatible accessories. These are useful options for people who prefer charging stands or magnetic accessories.

The main drawback is that the power adapter is sold separately, so buyers may need to budget for a compatible charger to achieve the advertised wired charging speed. Actual charging times also vary with temperature, battery level and usage during charging.

Value for Money

The iPhone 17 Pro Max offers a comprehensive flagship package: high performance, a large and bright display, versatile cameras, strong video capabilities and long battery life.

However, it sits in the premium end of the smartphone market. Its size and weight may also be unnecessary for people who mainly browse, message, stream videos and take occasional photos. A less expensive iPhone may deliver a better balance of features and cost for those users.

For professionals, creators, gamers and people who want Apple’s most capable large-screen iPhone, the price may be easier to justify. For budget-conscious buyers, the value depends on whether they will regularly use the advanced features.
