Apple has officially launched the AirPods 5, bringing a significant upgrade to its standard wireless earbuds lineup. The new earbuds keep Apple’s familiar open-ear design while adding improved Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), upgraded acoustics, Apple’s H2 chip and new AI-powered features.

Apple AirPods 5 Are Here: Price, Features, ANC and Everything You Need to Know

The AirPods 5 became available on September 18, 2026, following their announcement at Apple’s September event. Apple is offering two versions, with the main difference being the charging case and some additional controls.

AirPods 5 Price

The standard AirPods 5 start at $129 in the United States. A second version, called AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, costs $149.

The $149 model adds a wireless charging case, volume control through swiping on the stems, a built-in speaker for Find My and slightly longer battery life. Both versions include Active Noise Cancellation.

Apple has not listed an official Nigerian retail price in the sources reviewed here, so Nigerian pricing will depend on local retailers, import costs and exchange rates.

Open-Ear Design With Active Noise Cancellation

One of the biggest changes with the AirPods 5 is the combination of an open-ear design and ANC.

Unlike the AirPods Pro 3, the AirPods 5 do not use silicone ear tips that create a seal inside the ear canal. Instead, they sit more openly in the ear, which can be preferable for people who find traditional in-ear earbuds uncomfortable.

Apple says the AirPods 5 deliver up to 1.5 times more Active Noise Cancellation than the previous generation of AirPods with ANC. The company has also improved Transparency mode to make surrounding sounds feel more natural.

This makes the AirPods 5 particularly interesting because ANC has traditionally been more difficult to implement effectively in open-ear earbuds.

Better Sound Quality With the H2 Chip

The AirPods 5 use Apple’s H2 headphone chip, which also powers several advanced features across Apple’s current AirPods lineup.

Apple has redesigned the acoustic architecture with a new multiport design and next-generation Adaptive EQ. The earbuds also feature a custom high-excursion driver and high-dynamic-range amplifier.

Other audio features include Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Voice Isolation.

For calls, Voice Isolation is designed to prioritize your voice while reducing distracting background sounds.

Live Translation and Siri AI

The AirPods 5 also take advantage of Apple’s growing AI ecosystem.

With a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and supported software, users can access Live Translation, allowing conversations across supported languages to be translated through the AirPods.

Apple lists support for languages including English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese, although availability varies by language and region.

The earbuds also support Siri AI, giving users hands-free access to Apple’s updated assistant.

AirPods 5 Battery Life

Battery life depends on which version you buy.

The standard AirPods 5 provide up to 4 hours of listening with ANC enabled and up to 6 hours with noise control turned off. With the charging case, Apple rates the total at up to 20 hours with ANC enabled.

The AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case increase that to 5 hours on a single charge with ANC enabled and up to 22 hours with the case.

Apple also says five minutes of charging provides approximately one hour of listening time.

Charging and Find My

The standard AirPods 5 case charges through USB-C.

The $149 Wireless Charging Case model supports USB-C, Qi-certified wireless chargers and Apple Watch chargers. It also includes a built-in speaker that can help users locate the case through Apple’s Find My network.

Neither model includes a USB-C charging cable or power adapter in the box.

AirPods 5 vs AirPods Pro 3

The AirPods 5 are aimed at users who prefer an open-ear design, while the AirPods Pro 3 remain Apple’s more feature-rich in-ear option.

The Pro 3 uses silicone ear tips to create a seal, which can provide stronger isolation and noise cancellation. It also includes additional hearing-health capabilities that aren’t available on the standard AirPods 5.

The AirPods 5, meanwhile, offer a less intrusive open-ear fit and bring ANC to a lower price point.

That makes the main decision less about which model is universally better and more about whether you prefer open-ear comfort or an in-ear seal with more advanced features.

Should You Buy the AirPods 5?

The AirPods 5 are an important upgrade for Apple’s standard AirPods range. The combination of an open-ear design, ANC, the H2 chip, Spatial Audio, Live Translation and Siri AI gives them a much broader feature set than earlier standard AirPods.

The $129 starting price is also notable because Apple has brought ANC into the entry-level AirPods 5 rather than reserving it for a more expensive version.

For people who dislike silicone ear tips but still want noise cancellation, the AirPods 5 could be one of the most interesting new wireless earbuds of 2026.

The more expensive $149 version is differentiated mainly by its Wireless Charging Case, additional stem volume controls, Find My speaker and longer battery life.

With AirPods 5 now officially available, Apple’s current audio lineup includes the AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2, giving buyers three distinctly different options depending on whether they want open-ear earbuds, in-ear earbuds or over-ear headphones.

Bottom line: AirPods 5 bring some of Apple’s premium AirPods features to a cheaper open-ear design, with ANC being the headline upgrade. For anyone looking for Apple’s newest standard earbuds in 2026, this is the model to know about.
