Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market, and the result is the iPhone Duo. Announced in September 2026, the iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone and one of the biggest changes to the iPhone lineup in years.

iPhone Duo Review: Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Tested

Unlike a traditional iPhone, the Duo opens like a book to reveal a large 7.6-inch inner display. When closed, it uses a 5.4-inch outer screen. Apple has also equipped the phone with its A20 Pro chip, a titanium-based design, dual 48MP rear cameras and a redesigned version of iOS 27.

But at a starting price of $1,999, the real question is whether the iPhone Duo offers enough to justify its premium price.

iPhone Duo Design and Display

The design is arguably the biggest reason to consider the iPhone Duo.

Apple says the phone is its thinnest iPhone when unfolded, while the 7.6-inch internal display provides considerably more room for watching videos, browsing, gaming and multitasking. The outer display measures 5.4 inches and is designed to make the phone usable without opening it.

Early hands-on reports have praised the build quality and hinge. The fold is still visible under certain lighting, but Apple’s nano-texture display technology helps make the crease less noticeable. MacRumors also reported that the crease was difficult to see and feel during its initial hands-on experience.

The titanium construction and IP68 water and dust resistance also give the iPhone Duo a more premium feel than many first-generation foldables.

Design and Build

Performance

Powering the iPhone Duo is Apple’s A20 Pro chip. That puts the foldable firmly in Apple’s high-end performance category.

The bigger story, however, is how iOS takes advantage of the foldable screen. Apple has redesigned parts of iOS 27 to support multitasking, larger app layouts and new ways of using the phone when it is partially or fully opened.

For people who regularly multitask, the larger display could make the iPhone Duo feel closer to carrying a small tablet while still having a conventional smartphone available when the device is closed.

iPhone Duo Camera

The camera system is one area where the iPhone Duo makes some compromises.

Apple uses a dual 48MP rear-camera system, while the phone also introduces photography features specifically designed around the foldable form factor. For example, the outer display can be used to let subjects see themselves while taking photos.

However, comparisons with Apple’s Pro iPhones show that the Duo does not offer the same camera hardware, particularly when it comes to dedicated telephoto photography.

That means photography enthusiasts may still prefer an iPhone Pro model, while the Duo’s camera is more about combining capable photography with the flexibility of its folding design.

Battery Life and Charging

Apple has used a dual-battery architecture inside the iPhone Duo, along with a custom vapor chamber for thermal management. Apple describes the battery performance as all-day, although the large internal display naturally puts more demand on the battery.

Early comparisons suggest battery life is another area where the Duo gives up some advantages to Apple’s larger Pro models. Business Insider reported up to 26 hours of video streaming for the Duo compared with up to 38 hours for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Gaming

Gaming on the iPhone Duo is described as highly versatile and immersivesince it is powered by the flagship A20 Pro chip and a unique foldable form factor which allows you to do something else while enjoying your game.

Unfolding the iPhone Duo device to its 7.6-inch internal display provides a significantly larger canvas than a standard smartphone, and it eliminates the problem of the thumbs blocking the action.

The Biggest Problem: Price

The iPhone Duo price starts at $1,999 for 256GB, making it significantly more expensive than Apple’s conventional iPhone models. Storage options go as high as 2TB.

At this price, buyers aren’t simply paying for faster performance. They’re paying for an entirely different form factor.

That makes the Duo easier to justify for people who specifically want a foldable iPhone, but harder to justify for someone who simply wants the best camera or longest battery life Apple offers.

iPhone Duo Review: Is It Worth It?

The iPhone Duo is an impressive first attempt at a foldable iPhone. Apple appears to have concentrated on making the hardware feel refined rather than simply being first to market.

The large inner display, premium construction, powerful A20 Pro chip and foldable-focused iOS experience make the Duo genuinely different from a conventional iPhone.

But the $1,999 starting price and compromises in areas such as camera hardware and battery endurance mean it isn’t an obvious replacement for Apple’s Pro models.

For people who have been waiting specifically for a foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo is a fascinating new option. For everyone else, Apple’s traditional iPhone lineup may still make more sense.

Our verdict

EXCELLENT

iPhone Duo is a premium, high-performance device built for power users who want a tablet-sized screen in their pocket, but it requires accepting first-generation foldable compromises like heavy battery drain and thermal heat. It is a massive win for multitasking, media, and retro gaming, but users looking for lightweight comfort and all-day battery life are still better off with a traditional flagship iPhone.

Pros

  • Unfolds into a large tablet-sized display
  • Runs multiple apps simultaneously side-by-side
  • Handles heavy apps smoothly via the A20 Pro chip
  • Apps scale cleanly without awkward cropping
  • Fits classic game aspect ratios beautifully.

Cons

  • Heats up quickly under heavy dual-screen loads
  • Heavy Multitasking Lag
  • Battery Drain faster due to its two screens power consumption
  • Bulky and Ergonomics as it is noticeably thicker and heavier
  • Some third-party apps struggle with the folding transition
  • Very expensive
  • 9.5 Performance
  • 9.5 Display
  • 8.5 Camera
  • 8.0 Battery
  • 9.5 Design
  • 9.0 Software
  • 8.5 Charging
  • 6.5 Value
  • 9.0 Gaming
